SOME of Craven and North Yorkshire’s most breathtakingly beautiful landmark destinations have made it on to the shortlist for a competition run by one of television’s most popular and long-running programmes.

The BBC’s ‘Countryfile’ magazine has announced a list of the nation’s favourites to be voted on by viewers, which includes Ingleton in the ‘Village of the Year’ category, while the North York Moors make it into the ‘National Park of the Year’ selection.

North Yorkshire has also made the shortlist for ‘Holiday Destination of the Year’ for what the BBC calls its “vast moors, historic houses and a vibrant coast.”

Public voting for the ‘BBC Countryfile Magazine Awards 2019’ has already started online and is open to midnight on February 17.

A panel of experts, which includes the ‘Countryfile’ and ‘Farming Today’ presenter Charlotte Smith, have whittled down thousands of nominations to a final five in each category.

She said: “It was a joy to sit in a - small - room with some lovely and interesting people and chunter about our favourite places. I made notes and will be checking out some of the other judges’ recommendations. Actually making decisions on the shortlist was significantly harder! But I hope you agree we’ve found some fantastic parts of the country - now vote, and visit.”

Charlotte was joined on the judging panel by Countryfile Magazine editor Fergus Collins, historian and TV and radio presenter Eleanor Rosamund Barraclough, author and rural affairs journalist Mark Rowe and adventurer, travel writer and broadcaster, Phoebe Smith.

Fergus Collins said: "Congratulations on everyone who has been shortlisted – it was a tough judging process, so they can all justly feel proud at being part of this celebration of the best of the British countryside.

“Now it’s up to readers and website visitors to vote on their favourites.”
