AGAIN we are indebted to Skipton’s ‘Mr Sport’ Roger Ingham for this picture, taken in 1982, and an evocative reminder of Wharfedale Rugby Union Club’s highly popular summer gala and sports events of the era.

Taking the tug-of-war strain here is a team from Littondale and Upper Wharfedale, and featuring, Roger recalls, Wendy Hirst, England Test cricketer Sue Metcalfe and Tracy Dibb amongst others. Kilnsey-born Sue made her Test debut against New Zealand in Leeds, in 1984, and was a very accomplished batswoman and bowler for the national team.

Her last Test match was also against New Zealand, at Guildford in 1996.

Roger also remembers that the policeman keeping a careful and impartial eye on the proceedings is Peter Gaines, well-known throughout the Dales at this time.
