A GROUP which spent many years improving the health of elderly people has donated to Airedale Hospital, in memory of one of its founding members.

Isobel Scarborough was a driving force in a number of voluntary projects including Keighley Council for Voluntary Services and the Furniture Project, but died in 2017 aged 84.

She was a co-founder of Keighley Elderly Initiatives Group, which began over 25 years ago, but ceased its activities last year. The group decided to donate £1,000 to the Friends charity at Airedale Hospital, where Isobel was also involved.

Doreen Robinson, who worked with Isobel for 20 years as part of Keighley Elderly Initiatives, said: “It started when the Government gave communities funding to help elderly people. This was one of Isobel’s passions.

"Our group used to do a big event each year at Victoria Hall for older people’s week with food and entertainment. It was really popular.

"We decided though that with Isobel passing away and other members leaving it was time to close. We thought it would be fitting to make the donation to Airedale.”

The group have asked for the donation to be used for the hospital's maternity unit, as Isobel was a midwife by profession.

Eileen Proud, president of Friends of Airedale, said: “I knew Isobel for over 30 years. She was a Friend of Airedale and a real stalwart who always stuck by what she thought. She is sadly missed.

"We're very grateful that they've thought of us for this donation.”
