A UNICEF Day of Change event at Glusburn Community Primary School raised money for developing countries as well as awareness at home to the world's plastic problem recently.

Pupils and staff were taking part in their 11th annual event supporting children’s rights to good nutrition, an education, sanitation, clean water, health care and, this year, a clean environment.

The pupils looked at plastic waste and how many children in developing countries live alongside heaps of plastic rubbish, for example in Kathmandu, Nepal.

They understand that there is now so much plastic in the oceans that it is entering the food chain.

The school's UNICEF team led the children in a day of activities, enjoying the teacher’s Glusburn Bake-Off with all cakes decorated on a plastics theme and the winning cake raffled and won by Jewel Turner from Year 6.

There was also a Day for Change quiz with winners taking on the roles of head teacher, school secretary, PE coach, teaching assistant and mid-day supervisor.

The day included a plastic facts hunt set up as an orienteering activity in the school grounds and a celebratory assembly at the end of the school day for pupils and parents, raising awareness of the need to take care of our environment for children around the world.
