SIR - As someone who has steadfastly promoted and pursued a One Yorkshire outcome for Devolution across the whole of Yorkshire, your report on the proposed mergers of the Local Enterprise Partnerships of North Yorkshire, York and The East Riding with the Leeds City LEP in the Craven Herald of February 7 (Mixed views on organisations' merger) needs some clarification.
My words quoted were that I feared the outcome of these LEP mergers could lead to the combined metropolitan councils of West Yorkshire having a powerful and overriding say on the future economic and employment growth in North Yorkshire. These were taken somewhat out of context with what I also said that in any merger the rural needs of North Yorkshire businesses were not subsumed by the overwhelming urban metropolitan demands by the Leeds City economic and social interests.
I also emphasised that any merged Local Enterprise Partnerships across Yorkshire should have a sub area governance structure that respected North Yorkshire’s needs and were compatible with the governance arrangements of a devolution outcome of a One Yorkshire.
North Yorkshire residents and business deserve nothing less.
