THIS week we travel all the way back to 1911, when Skipton seems to have commandeered all available bunting to celebrate a great national occasion - the coronation of King George V.

The event took place on June 22, in Westminster Abbey, when the King and his Queen, Mary of Teck, were installed as heads of the United Kingdom and the British Empire in a ceremony which, three years before the outbreak of Word War I, turned out to be the last such occasion attended by representatives of most of the royal families of Europe.

This photo seems to have been taken from just in front of where the war memorial now stands.

In 1911, Skipton was more than ready to join the party - The Herald reported that: “Night after night, an enthusiastic company of artificial flower makers, Venetian mast decorators, shield trimmers, emblem designers and flower basket makers have worked with an energy worthy of the cause.”
