A WOMAN arrested after she flouted a court order for robbing her grandfather was in for a nasty shock today.

Sherie North, who was apprehended by the police overnight, had not been told that her non-custodial sentence had been ramped up to four years imprisonment, Bradford Crown Court heard.

North, 23, of Harden Grove, Ravenscliffe, Bradford, was in the court cells when her solicitor advocate, John Bottomley, said she was unaware of the Court of Appeal decision yesterday.

The ruling by the higher court in London immediately overturned the “unduly lenient” suspended prison term she received at Bradford Crown Court in December for her role in the violent robberies.

North, a drug addict, was spared prison by the Recorder of Bradford, Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC. Her suspended sentence included a drug rehabilitation requirement, a rehabilitation activity requirement with the probation service and a curfew order.

She was “breached” last month after obeying just one night of the curfew requirement and failing to attend the induction meeting with the probation service.

At that hearing, Mr Bottomley conceded North’s “low level of engagement” with the order.

To which Ken Green for the prosecution replied: “There has been no engagement. She hasn’t engaged with anything.”

A warrant not backed for bail was issued when North did not attend court for the hearing.

She remained at large until the police apprehended her after issuing an appeal for her whereabouts.

Mr Bottomley, who represented North at the Court of Appeal, said it was thought prudent not to bring her into the dock because news of the lengthy prison sentence would then be broken to her in open court.

“She doesn’t know what happened at the Court of Appeal yesterday,” Mr Bottomley told Judge Neil Davey QC.

The judge asked the probation service to withdraw the breach proceedings because, in the light of the four year prison sentence, the original order “did not exist any more.”

He suggested that Mr Bottomley went to the cells to see North to “explain her position to her.”

North’s co-accused, Scott Cross, 34, of Wharncliffe Crescent, Eccleshill, Bradford, was jailed for nine years for four robberies and an attempted robbery.

Cross and North pushed past her grandfather, John Horvath, at his Incommunities flat in Bradford on September 29.

Cross brandished a hammer near his face, demanding money and jewellery, tipping up the pensioner’s bed and throwing him to the floor. The pair fled in a taxi with jewellery and £160 in cash.

Cross and North returned to Mr Horvath’s flat on October 3, pretending to be from Incommunities to gain entry. Cross pushed him over, demanding: “Where’s the money?”

He hit Mr Horvath in the face and again tipped his bed over while he was on it. Mr Horvath pulled the emergency cord and the couple fled empty-handed.

After the Court of Appeal ruling, Solicitor General Robert Buckland QC MP said: “North terrorised her own grandfather to feed her drug addiction. I hope that a custodial sentence gives North the time she needs to reflect on her actions and overcome her addiction.”
