UPPER Wharfedale School is celebrating being placed once again in the top five per cent in the country for 'student progress'.

In the Government's recent GCSE School Performance tables for secondary schools, the Threshfield school also performed well as a mixed, non selective school in a selective area, and was placed second highest performing of its kind in England.

In a year which saw further changes to the GCSE grading structure, students at Upper Wharfedale made better progress than the average of selective schools in the country, with students achieving an average of more than half a grade higher, per subject, than those with a similar secondary school starting position.

Andrew Taylor, headteacher, welcomed the results.

“The data shown in the performance tables is very pleasing indeed. We are delighted with our students’ achievements and with the progress they have made, which is testimony to the hard work and dedication of all those involved in maintaining these high standards. However, it is important to note that numerical measures only paint part of the picture when judging the quality of a school and there is much more to education than outcomes. We pride ourselves on providing a well-rounded education within our vision of providing “excellence for all”. This includes a lot of work on developing confidence, resilience, social, emotional and mental health through a wide range of experiences both in and out of the classroom.”

There are currently about 290 pupils at the school, to find out more about the school, visit its website: uws.n-yorks.sch.uk
