A 24 YEAR old from Cross Hills will be subject to an 18 month community order after admitting being in possession of knife in a public place.

Police went in search of Jordan Varley on February 2 after his mother alerted emergency services that her son had left the house with a craft knife and was threatening to harm himself, heard Skipton Magistrates Court.

Officers found him in Skipton Road, Keighley with a Stanley knife with a retractable blade, the court was told last Friday.

In mitigation, Mohammed Hussain said Varley was a young man who had mental health problems and so far had failed to get any help.It was a rare that punishment was not needed for being in possession of a bladed article, but this was one of them, said Mr Hussain.

Varley, of Beech Street, Cross Hills was sentenced to an 18 month community order with up to 40 rehabilitation requirement activity days. He will also have to pay a surcharge of £85. Magistrates made a forfeiture and destruction order on the craft knife.
