SIR - The employees of the Bolton Abbey Estate along with volunteer Beamsley residents should be congratulated for taking a recent Friday off to clear the litter from the A59 verges between Pace Gate and Halton East, a distance of some eight miles. What a difference.

We now need to ensure that the section from Halton East to beyond Broughton is also now cleared of this disgusting detritus before Easter so that Skipton can truthfully claim to be 'The Gateway to the Dales' rather than 'The Gateway to the Dump'.

For this to happen we now need our elected Craven District Councillors and our North Yorkshire County Councillors to get their heads together and bring pressure to bear on whichever departments are responsible. Whilst they are doing that, they might also bring their attention to the many reflective highway signs along the Skipton bypass and beyond which are becoming increasingly unreadable due to the fact that nobody seems to be cleaning them.
