YOUNG pupils of Hellifield Community Primary School Primary joined the fight to save the village's 'Flashes' - by writing to councillors to put their point of view.

A mixed group of Reception,Year1 and Year 2 children thought about why the Flashes, - a 'green space' and wildlife haven - should be saved from a planned holiday park development. Planners recently kicked out the scheme.

The children had written letters independently to the council explaining that they wanted to nominate the Flashes because of their unique nature in supporting diverse animal and plant life - including themselves.

Their teacher Tracey Jones said: "We made a list of all the things they enjoy doing, seeing and hearing on and near the Flashes.

"We are overjoyed at the decision to refuse planning permission but would like to see this space safeguarded for the future children of the village."
