THE storm clouds of war have already rolled over Britain, but these three and four-year olds are presumably only vaguely aware that the country is fighting for its life.
They are the infants class of Sutton-in-Craven Church School and the year is either 1941 or 1942. One of the children, on the left of the front row, is Allan Midgley, who still lives in Sutton-in-Craven - and who remembers almost all the names of his classmates.
These include: Enid Lister, the Wagstaffe twins Margaret and Audrey, their sister Joan Wagstaffe, David Clark - on the rocking horse - John Philip, Brian Parnell, Marion McIver, Alec Crossley, Frank Birtwhistle, and Tony Beecroft. Allan, who became an apprentice weaver after leaving school, also remembers that the name of their headmistress was Miss Turford.
