YOUNG bookworms at Cowling Primary School have carried out a total of 25,755 minutes of reading - equivalent to 18 days - for a sponsored read, helped by a £500 donation from the village's New2U shop, in the Methodist church.

The shop helps numerous local charities and last year the school’s Young Leaders helped sort donated clothes, books and toys ready for sale.

Andrea Moore, a former Cowling pupil, presented the cheque in a school assembly to the school council chairman and vice chairman, Jed Wilkin and Mollie Raynsford.

Headteacher Sue Marshall said: “It was a wonderful surprise and we are so grateful to the New2U group for their generous gift. The children have been carrying out a sponsored read and those funds, together with the donation, will help us rejuvenate our reading scheme and buy “special” books for each classroom, hopefully adding to the children’s enjoyment of reading.

“At Cowling we believe reading is the key to success opening up the whole curriculum and firing children’s imaginations.”
