FIREFIGHTERS from North Yorkshire were among crews called out to fight the blaze on Ilkley Moor and Marsden Moor over the Easter weekend.

Skipton station watch manager Martyn Hughes detailed the battle with a series of photographs and videos.

He said the firefighters were grateful of the support from the public. He described the difficulty in tackling a fire which appeared under control on the surface but where the pear continued to burn underground.

James Hastings, crew manager at Grassington Station said his firefighters called into to a branch of Costa after a shift on the moor and a member of the public insisted in paying for their coffees.

West Yorkshire Police have confirmed that one man has been charged with arson in connection with the weekend blaze on Ilkley Moor. Two other men have been released under investigation.

Barbecues are said to have caused he fire on Marsden Moor.
