A SENIOR nurse from Cowling has retired after a career spanning more than three decades.

Gez Barrett spent all her working life at Bradford Royal Infirmary (BRI).

She was matron of the intensive care unit and pain management service and the hospital trust's Westwood Park Diagnostic and Treatment Centre.

"I have enjoyed my time at BRI immensely and feel like I have been able to make a real difference to our patients and staff," said Gez, 56.

"It's a team effort – everybody brings a special gift."

Gez completed her nursing degree in 1985 and has held numerous posts over the years, predominantly in critical care.

Roles have ranged from staff nurse to sister, before she took-up the matron appointment.

She has picked-up several awards including, in 2007, an 'inspiration' accolade at the West Yorkshire Critical Care Network Nursing Awards.

Tribute is paid by BRI chief nurse, Karen Dawber.

"Gez was one of our longest-serving matrons," she said.

"During her time with us, our critical care service has changed and grown beyond all recognition.

"Our state-of-the-art 16-bed ICU, which she was instrumental in the planning and delivering of when it opened in 2016, is testament to the legacy she is leaving behind.

"We will miss her immensely but it's been an absolute privilege to work with her."
