ARTISTS across Craven will be inviting visitors to take a peek into their studios over the first two weekends in June.

More than 100 artists across the county will be taking part in North Yorkshire Open Studios, a creative treasure trail of studios, stretching from the coast and taking in the moors and dales, exploring villages, hamlets and market towns.

And, there will be many Craven craftspeople and artists taking part with workspaces of all shapes and sizes, and all open for free.

Gargrave studios include artisans, textile artist Janet Browne whose embroidered wall hangings feature journeys throughout the Yorkshire Dales and Alison Wiffen who makes beautifully patterned ceramic jewellery, both are at Gargrave Pottery.

In Skipton, visitors can drop in on Hannah Chesterman whose art reflects her enduring love of northern landscapes and Carolyn Hird-Rogers with a fantastic selection of collaged books and cards.

There will skillfully carved sheep sculptures and paintings amongst the topiary hedges in a Thornton-in -Craven garden when stonemason Fiona Bowley and painter Lucy Morrison will be jointly showing their artwork in the breathtaking open-air studio.

Meanwhile, stunning prints by Helen Peyton at Skyreholme celebrate the beauty of the night skies.

Katharine Holmes landscape paintings are informed by Dales which surround her Malham studio, in which she immerses herself, painting and drawing outside in the ever-changing light and weather.

Lothersdale based Nicole Dickinson’s paintings also depict the moods and atmosphere of the rugged countryside around her home. Nearby, Louise Fletcher creates semi-abstract paintings in which landscape serves as a starting point.

A creative cluster at Carleton include: Annie Tempest, best known as a cartoonist for Country Life magazine, who will show a variety of her figurative sculptures. Printmaker Bridget Tempest who is inspired by the natural world. and Jacquie Denby whose semi abstract paintings relate to the Dales. Also on show will be fashion designer and lecturer, Joan Murray whose garments use innovative knitting machine techniques, and leading British studio potter Anna Lambert whose beautifully created ceramics explore themes such as climate change.

For lovers of still life paintings a visit to the studio of David Thomas is a must, to view his ‘poetic’ paintings. In Grassington, artists include painters, photographers, sculptors and ceramicists.The open studios event will take place on Saturday, June 1, and Sunday, June 2; and on Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9, between 10am and 5pm.
