TRAIN drivers were put on alert this afternoon as firefighters tackled a blaze close to the railway line at Steeton.

Smoke billowed across the tracks from a fire in a large skip at the rear of Damart's warehouse, off Station Road.

Heat from the inferno also damaged fencing alongside the line.

"We took a measure known as 'applying a caution' whereby our control centre alerts the railway authorities of the situation," said Keighley Fire Station watch commander, Michael Rhodes.

"Train drivers are then made aware of what's happening and can slow down as they approach the scene and pass safely.

"No services had to be stopped, but there was a lot of smoke around that section of tracks so caution was needed."

Firefighters were called out to the incident just before 4pm.

One crew from Keighley attended. A breathing apparatus set was worn and a hose reel used to bring the fire under control.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
