TOWNSFOLK have been praised for their “truly brilliant community spirit”after showing their backing for a campaign which fights Alzheimer’s.

Shopkeepers and business owners in Bentham donated space in their window frontages to promote the Alzheimer’s Society’s National Dementia Action Week, which ended on Sunday.

They were asked to help beforehand by members of the Bentham and District Dementia-Friendly Community (BDDFC) group, formed 18 months ago to raise awareness of dementia in the area.

And the group’s members say they were extremely pleased with the response, which saw displays and information provided in premises throughout the town.

BDDFC chairman Jonathan Scott said: “We approached local shops and businesses encouraging them to give up space and window frontage to promoting what can be done to tackle dementia.

“The results have been fantastic with some truly amazing displays.

“It is a testament to all involved and a truly brilliant example of community spirit.

“We work with like-minded organisations, local businesses and individuals to improve the opportunities and quality of life for those living with dementia and their carers.”

He added that the group was closely allied to other local dementia organisations, and especially with the train travellers group the Bentham Line, which is based at Bentham railway station. A major aim of The Bentham Line is to make train travel easier for those living with dementia and to organise trips, days out and other events which can help those with the condition and their carers.

National Dementia Action Week saw hundreds of events throughout the country, which were attended by thousands of people.

l The annual meeting of the Bentham and District Dementia-Friendly Community group will be held at Bentham Golf Club on Tuesday, June 4, at 2pm.
