HOLDERS Bowling Old Lane overcame a spirited Heckmondwike & Carlinghow side by 18 runs in a Jack Hampshire Cup second-round tie which was reduced to 25 overs per side by rain.

Old Lane raced to 197-3 in 21.1 overs with opener Amjid Hussain (49no), Haroon Tariq (41), Farakh Hussain (38) and Ahsan Alishan (35) all making good contributions.

The rate of scoring and the threat of bad weather no doubt prompted skipper Farakh Hussain’s decision to declare.

Heckmondwike & Carlinghow maybe bottom of the Conference without a win this season, but they responded positively.

Opener Paul Cooper (31) and Syed Shah Bukhari (24) added 55 in 6.2 overs before both became victims of Shoaib Zahid.

Shokat Iqbal (33) tried to keep his side in the hunt but the loss of wickets at key times slowed Heckmondwike & Carlinghow’s momentum and they finished on 179-6.

Great Preston were the only Conference side to beat Championship Two opponents as they defeated Jer Lane by 86 runs.

Great Preston's Ollie Baron (32), Tyson Freeman (31) and James Conlon (31) had to counter the threat posed by David Syme of Jer Lane as their side made 171-6 in 35 overs.

Jer Lane were reduced to 7-4 in the opening overs of their reply and never recovered as they were bowled out for 85. Callum Jordan (4-36) and Jacob Wright (3-5) did the damage.

All-rounder Josh Haynes was Birstall’s match-winner as they romped to an eight-wicket win over Gildersome & Farnley Hill.

He took 3-23 with his left-arm spin as Gildersome & Farnley were restricted to 116-8 in 32 overs, Gethin Clark top scoring with 32.

Haynes followed up with an unbeaten 70 as Birstall took just 15 overs to secure their victory.

Championship Two leaders Yeadon were the first team to secure a place in the third round with a crushing 10-wicket win over Spen Victoria.

Their decision to ask the home side to bat first was soon rewarded as Paul Machell (3-12) removed the top order.

From then on it was the spin duo of Gareth Lee (4-4) and James Massheder (3-13) who took centre stage as Spen crumbled to 54 all out.

Openers Lee (25no) and Sam Massheder (24no) guided Yeadon to their victory target in 12.2 overs.

Hunslet Nelson survived an early batting scare to overcome Brighouse by five wickets in a low-scoring encounter at Gipsy Lane.

After Glenn Thompson (4-14) had helped bowl out Brighouse for 86 - a score which could have been a lot smaller had Quadratullah Azizi not made 33 - Nelson slipped to 16-3 before Danny Cross (32no) steered them home.

Carlton recovered from a shaky start to secure a comfortable 106-run triumph at Adwalton. They were reduced to 17-3 after being put in, but Daniel Ford stabilised the innings by making 49 before Steve Cooper (49no) and Nick Busby (47) added 91 for the sixth wicket.

Adwalton were soon in trouble when they replied to Carlton’s 187-6 made in 35 overs. They plunged to 12-4 and were eventually all out for 81 with the prolific wicket taker Jonathan Rudge picking up 5-34.

There was no play at Sandal v Windhill & Daisy Hill, and Hopton Mills v Buttershaw St Paul’s so those games move to the reserve date of Sunday, June 30.
