THE Burlington restaurant at The Devonshire Arms in Bolton Abbey, and the Angel Inn at Hetton have made it into the top 100 national restaurants of the year.

The Estrella Damm National Restaurant Awards, announced at a ceremony at The Hurlingham Club in London, were hosted by Restaurant Magazine, and is the magazine’s annual countdown of the UK,’s top restaurants, as voted by leading chefs, restaurateurs and food writers.

James O’Donnell, general manager of the Devonshire Arms Hotel and Spa, was part of a team from the Burlington, placed 46th in the top 100, who attended the ceremony.

“I am over the moon with our inclusion on this top list, it’s a shared accolade for Paul Leonard (head chef) and also the whole team and all of the hard work and passion they have put in. It’s the first time we have entered this particular award, so I am especially pleased and delighted to be part of Yorkshire’s success on this year’s listing!.”

The Angel at Hetton, placed 56th in the listing, is owned by one of the UK’s most respected and accomplished chefs, Michael Wignall.

The judges said: “This Yorkshire institution was one of the county’s first gastropubs when it was made famous by the late chef Denis Watkins in the 1980s. Now its reputation is on the rise again under new owner Michael Wignall, who took over the pub with his wife Johanna in partnership with James and Jo Wellock in 2018.

“Michael is one of the UK’s most respected and accomplished chefs and has so far won a Michelin star in every kitchen he has helmed since 1993.

“At The Angel he’s serving up a refined take on pub food, with a simple à la carte menu.”
