PEN-pals have reunited on Yorkshire soil for the first time in almost half a century.

Eva Csaki first visited the region from Hungary in 1970, when she was just 16.

Now she has been back to once again tour locations across the area with her pen-pal, Shirley Davids, who lives at Sutton.

"We retraced our steps for several visits – to Bingley, Ilkley and Haworth, for example – but also enjoyed going to places new to Eva, such as Hardcastle Crags, York and the Lake District," said Shirley.

"It was fascinating seeing the changes. For example, on this visit we travelled on several motorways and by-passes that were not there in 1970!

"Also, we now have many gadgets and modern technology. Eva was skyping and phoning home, sending pictures and messages. Last time there was not even the opportunity for a short phone call to reassure her parents – we had to rely on telegrams!

"But one of the most fascinating and enjoyable aspects of the visit was the chance to meet and get to know each other's families – the children especially being a delightful journey of discovery.

"We agreed on how important families are as the smallest groups of community."

Eva was accompanied on the trip by her 12-year-old granddaughter, Hani Sipos.

Shirley said she and Eva had continued to correspond over the years and there had been several visits between the families, but that it was "lovely" for her friend to be back in Yorkshire.

"We've got many things in common and there's so much we agree on," said Shirley.

"Even though there are many differences in our lives, we've remained friends who understand each other."

Eva said everyone she had met during the visit had been extremely welcoming and kind.

"Having friends can help make the world a bright place," she added.

"It is a must to find precious moments. live happily and share positive feelings, projecting them towards as many people as possible.

"The trip has also given Hani the opportunity to see a different part of the world and develop her thirst for travel."
