Powerful dance routines and impressive stunts were performed by youngsters from a Carlisle primary to mark the end of a successful school year.

The annual showcase aims to celebrate all of the gymnastics and dance that happens at Stanwix School each year.

It was held in the theatre at the University of Cumbria’s Brampton Road campus, home to the Institute of the Arts.

The showcase gave dancers and gymnasts of all ages a chance to perform on a big stage in front of their families.

Stanwix teacher Fiona Reed said there is a love of dance and gymnastics across the school, and they encourage children of all abilities to get involved and enjoy it.

“We’ve had children who have won medals at national events and others who just come along for fun, because they enjoy taking part.

“It’s all different age groups. The youngest performer was five all the way up to 11.

“A quarter of the school were involved in the show,” she said.

“There are also girls and boys in the show. This year was the biggest number of boys we’ve had taking part.”

Stanwix School runs dance and gymnastics clubs and some of the children compete in events and competitions.

Held last Thursday, the end of term show had two performances - one in the afternoon and one in the evening.

Each show lasted for two hours with a wide range of different performances, featuring both gymnastics and dance routines.

“It’s really just a way to celebrate what we’ve been doing, and the parents can come and see it,” added Mrs Reed.

“Holding it at the art college makes it extra special.

“It was also a way for us to thank the children for all their hard work and dedication.

“We’ve been holding it every year for the last three years. It really is a nice event and everyone enjoys it.

“We’ve had some really lovely feedback.”
