SILSDEN Gala has been hailed as a success by organisers.

Crowds turned out in force for yesterday's event.

The organising committee pays tribute to townspeople for their backing.

“We were really pleased with the turnout and the support given to the event by the people of Silsden,” said a spokesman.

“We’d like to say a special thank-you to all those who gave-up their time on Friday and Saturday to set-up the field.”

The gala began as normal with a parade, which set off from Howden Road and made its way along Kirkgate, Briggate, Skipton Road, Bell Square, Bolton Road and Dale View, into the playing fields.

The prize for the best vehicular display went to the Old Post Office, winner of the gala queen floats was Colne Gala Queen, a ‘best walking group’ accolade went to Handprints, fancy dress winner was Gogglebox and the title of best overall group went to Silsden All Stars majorettes.

Prizes were presented by the Silsden town mayor and mayoress, Councillor and Mrs Michael O’Dwyer.

This year’s Silsden Gala king and queen were Anderson Healey and Alicea-Mae Gould, who were chosen for the regal roles at an event earlier this year.

Alicea-Mae enjoys horse riding and Anderson’s hobbies include BMX biking.

The selection event – in March – also included the chance for youngsters to make Mother’s Day cards and small planters, with flowers, and decorate buns.

A wide range of attractions was staged at the gala field.

There was a Marshall Waddington’s funfair, a climbing wall, sumo wrestlers and a dog show.

Among those performing in the arena were the Eclipse Jazz Band and Accrington Pipe Band, and there was a display by Silsden All Stars.

The 120-strong Voices of Yorkshire choir then entertained with various songs.

“The grand finale was the appearance of a number of local groups culminating with the headliner The Sheratons,” said the spokesman. “Unfortunately this was spoiled by a deluge of rain, which had held off for the early part of the gala.”
