ANOTHER classic BBC sitcom comes to Sutton as the village’s Green Hut Theatre Company presents Keeping Up Appearances.

The exploits of snobbish lower-middle-class social climber Hyacinth Bucket will generate laughter for two nights next month.

Audiences can reacquaint themselves with Hyacinth’s eccentric family – her senile father, her lower-class sisters Daisy and Rose, and Daisy’s proudly bone-idle husband Onslow.

And they can decide for themselves whether Hyacinth’s surname is pronounced Bucket or – as this stuck-up lady prefers – Bouquet.

In a specially-written stage spin-off from the TV show, Hyacinth’s neighbour Emmet is putting on a play in the village hall and really, really doesn’t want his nemesis to know about it.

But other members of Hyacinth’s family are in the cast – and it’s not long before she discovers the truth and decides they need the benefit of her expertise.

That’s the cue for comic chaos and a mystery gun-toting man in a gas mask.

The Green Hut Theatre Companies staging Keeping Up Appearances following success in recent years with the likes of Allo ‘Allo, Are You Being Served and The Vicar of Dibley.

A spokesman said: “Our audiences know what they like as summer turns to autumn – sitting back to have a good laugh watching characters they know from their TV screens.

“They also appreciate the supper we lay on during performances of our September play. This year the menu is in keeping with Hyacinth Bucket’s idea of entertaining!”

Keeping Up Appearances was written by Roy Clarke, creator of Last Of The Summer Wine, and aired on BBC One from 1990 to 1995.

There were 44 episodes across five series, including four Christmas specials, the series only ending when its leading lady Patricia Routledge moved on to other projects.

Each episode followed Hyacinth in her attempts to prove her social superiority, and to gain social standing with those she considers upper class.

Her attempts are constantly hampered by her lower-class extended family, who she is desperate to hide, and she ends up battling to protect her social credibility.

Keeping Up Appearances was a great success in the UK was also popular in the USA, Canada, Australia and across Europe.

Keeping Up Appearances will be presented at Sutton Village Hall on September 6 and 7 at 7.15pm. Email suttongreenhuttheatre@gmail.com or call 01535 632289 to book tickets for the play.
