A GROUP of four friends with a combined age of 265 successfully cycled the entire Yorkshire boundary in aid of the charity Brain Tumour Research and Support Across Yorkshire.

‘Four Auld Fellas’, made up of David Goldie, 73, and Kevin Wharton, 65, both members of Skipton Rotary Club, along with Ray Cryer, 71, and Rich Newall, 55, cycled 412 miles, and climbed 29,000 feet including to the top of Tan Hill, home of Britain’s highest public house, in just five days.

They raised just under £5,000 in memory of Skipton Rotary president, John Wright’s daughter Annette, who tragically died of a brain tumour aged just 11 years.

Mr Goldie said: “It was an epic ride in which we embraced all weathers, but after the first day which was the toughest, we settled into it well. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who sponsored us and also to Alexander’s which raised just short of £500 through sales of its Goldie’s beer as well hosting the welcome back party for us.

“The scenery was incredible, from the magnificent Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors to the industrial Hull and Redcar on the east coast and it certainly struck me just how different and large Yorkshire is.”
