A BUMPER crowd enjoyed a carnival atmosphere at this year’s Kilnsey Show and Sports which went ahead on Tuesday.

Around 13,000 people made their way to the popular Dales event to see the cream of the agricultural world show off their prize-winning animals.

Among these accolades were champion Limousin and commercial supreme champion which went to the Richardson family, from Appleby, while the sheep supreme champion went to a Charollais owned by Kenton Foster, of Leyburn.

The show was the biggest yet, with a record number of trade stands and exhibitors making it a perfect destination for families.

Show chairman Chris Windle, who had taken the reins from long-running chairman Robert Lambert, this year’s vice president.

Mr Windle said: “It went fantastically well. Everything seemed to go like clockwork.

“The sun shone and there was a good number of people there.

“The highlight for me was seeing so many smiling faces and people saying how much they enjoyed it.

“It was my first year as chairman and I spent most of the day walking around checking that everything was going as it should. It went by in whirl.

“It was a big show. The sheep section was the biggest it has ever been. We had more trade stands than ever before and the food and craft sections were double in size. We had to open another field for a car park,” he said.

“The sheep show was back this year which had a lot of interest and the birds of prey in the main ring were well received. All around there was lots to see and do.

We were fortunate the weather was good. We got a bit of rain during the harness racing, but the evening was warm and a lot of people stayed for it.”

Show president Dr Peter Whitehead, completing his two-year tenure in the position added: “My wife Kate and I had a great day, my second year as president of this great show. What a privilege this has been, meeting friends old and new and seeing so many people enjoying the day in this magnificent setting.

Such a beautiful showcase for the stewardship of the land and the produce of the communities in the area. The weather was kind, which helped make it one of the best, and things ran smoothly, a testimony to the amazing preparation and sheer hard work which goes on in the background.

“Thanks to all involved, especially to Kathy Lambert, who is retiring after 14 years as show secretary, and to Chris Windle who has got off to a great start as the new chairman.”
