BURNSALL Sports enjoyed one of the sunniest days in its 120 years - causing hydration issues for the record entry in both the ten mile road race and the classic fell race.

Drink stations at the village event were in high demand, and there was great competition for the athletes of all ages.

On the village green, children and adults took part in flat races, sack races, egg and spoon and wheelbarrow races at the same time as the 10 mile road race athletes toiled in the sun between Hebden, Grassington, Linton and Thorpe.

Mr Punch avoided Judy long enough to welcome back the first three runners in the 10 Mile to finish in less than one hour.

Fell runners in running club colours warmed up on the green before competing in England’s premier short fell race, where the winner climbed to the cairn on Burnsall Fell in 10 minutes and came back down to the village in five minutes.

Champion fell runner, Ted Mason from Appletreewick, despite being grounded and in a head brace following an accident on his mountain bike, provided commentary on the fell races.

Skipton Brass Band played all the afternoon, tombola prizes were won, children laughed through the intricacies of face painting, bouncy castle and pillow fight,

Prize giving in the early evening was introduced to the strains of the communal anthem of Jesus Shall Reign, and closed another excellent day for visitors and locals alike, said one of the organisers, James Maxfield.
