SIR - I write in response to and agreement with the letter from Duncan Smith (Craven Herald, October 10) regarding the new Craven signs which recently appeared at roadsides. Although I am not local in origin (Cornwall, Devon, Wiltshire, Devon again, then South Wales before coming to live in Yorkshire in 1989) I've lived in Earby since 1999 and drive up and down Wysick Hill countless times. A while ago I was very surprised to see the new Craven sign at the top and although an attractive painting, I thought then that it's in the wrong place.

As an outdoor pursuits teacher for many years and still an avid hill walker, I use OS maps and local maps regularly and know where the county boundaries are, both geographically and physically. I know that Earby and Barnoldswick are actually in West Craven, Yorkshire and many years before I came to live here, they were both "moved" for administrative purposes only, into the Pendle area of Lancashire, and the post codes were changed from BD to BB. Although Earby addresses show as in Lancashire for postal reasons, in reality Earby, together with Barnoldswick, is in Yorkshire and therefore West Craven, so Craven does not start at the top of Wysick Hill!
