A DISQUALIFIED driver trying to evade the police jumped out of his car while it was still moving.

Blackburn magistrates heard the vehicle hit a wall and then rolled back into the police car which had pulled up behind.

The court was told Jake Lee Frankland ran off but was chased and detained by a police dog.

Frankland, 25, of Coniston Avenue, Accrington, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified, without insurance and without due care and attention and possession of cannabis. He was jailed for 24 weeks.

Catherine Allan, prosecuting, said at the time of the incident Frankland was subject to two disqualifications.

A police officer driving towards Accrington town centre on June 19 saw Frankland driving a Vauxhall Corsa and started to follow him.

The Corsa turned down several street, at one stage swerving to avoid a dog walker, before the driver jumped out of the still moving vehicle.

After Frankland had been detained the police discovered eight, individually potted cannabis plants in the car.

Ben Leech, defending, said his client accepted he was not assisted by his record.

"On this occasion he let his guard down when he was asked to do a favour by his partner's dad," said Mr Leech. "He agreed to use the other man's car to take a child's play mat to a nearby address."

Mr Leech said his client was adamant that he was not aware of the cannabis plants although he had to accept that while he was in possession of the car he was also in possession of the plants.
