NOW is the time to nominate an unsung hero who helps improve the health and wellbeing of others for a Craven Community Champion Award.

The Health and Wellbeing Award, which last year was won by the Skipton centre of Cancer Support Yorkshire, recognises those who have helped make a contribution to improving the health and wellbeing of people by providing care to the vulnerable, by bringing the community together to look after each other or helping people to live healthier lives in their community or the wider district.

The panel will be looking for an individual, voluntary group or organisation who have made a positive difference to improving the well-being of residents and who have motivated and supported people to live healthier lives. They will also have brought people together to help vulnerable people in their community.

Award sponsors, the Broughton Hall Estate, has properties and offices to rent, and holiday accommodation with worldwide visitors.

A spokesman said: “The Broughton Hall Estate is delighted to work with a number of local charities; we recognise the valuable role that the community and voluntary sector play in Craven. The people of Craven are special and their outstanding contributions and commitment to their community make such a difference to the lives of local people. To recognise the hard work and commitment of our communities, Broughton Hall Estate is very proud to sponsor the award.”

Last year’s winner, the Skipton centre of Cancer Support Yorkshire, based in Otley Street, was set up in 2014 and has supported almost 1,000 people who have been diagnosed with cancer.

Its aim is to support the psychological wellbeing of anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis – either their own or that of someone they support.

The centre is managed and co-ordinated by paid staff, but the services are all provided by volunteers who turn up each week to support the clients.

Craven Community Champions is run by Craven District Council with support from a number of businesses and the Craven Herald. To nominate an individual or group for an award, by November 10, visit the website:cravendc.gov.uk/communitychampions or from participating shop or service, library or doctors surgery.

Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony at The Coniston Hotel in February.
