CAVE rescue volunteers were called out yesterday (Sunday) to help a pair of walkers who had got into difficulty on Ingleborough.

The man and woman had been attempting to climb the Yorkshire Three Peaks when they had become ‘cragfast’ on the steep rocky scramble above Humphrey Bottom, shortly after 4pm.

A spokesman for the Cave Rescue Organisation, based in Clapham, said with daylight fading, strong winds, and a low cloud, they had called for help.

The team was able to pinpoint their exact location with SARLOC – a system by which the team can send a text message which interrogates the location services on a mobile phone to provide members with an OS grid reference of the casualty location.

“Two vehicles were deployed onto the hill and drove up to Braithwaite Wife Hole. From there a hasty party set off on foot with another group following behind with additional equipment in case a rope rescue or stretcher carry was required.

“ Fortunately, the well-equipped pair were able to be walked off the hill back down to our vehicles with some encouragement and physical support of the CRO team members.

“On getting back to the vehicles, they were driven back down to the road head where they were warmed up with a hot drink before being transported back to their car in Horton in Ribblesdale by a team member local to that area.”
