SKIPTON’S House of Fraser department store closed on Friday with mystery surrounding what the building will be in the future.

It is understood the High Street premises will be closed for some time, but could open in March next year as some sort of retail outlet - although nothing is confirmed.

Closing down signs first went up in November after Sports Direct, new owners of House of Fraser, shut down several of its stores.

Former owner of the building, Royal London Asset Management, has since confirmed it sold the building last year.

The new owner is understood to be High Street Skipton Limited. The company was registered with Companies House in February this year and has its registered address in Carlisle.

According to the district council, the premises was let.

Workmen were at the rear of the store this week taking out all the fixtures and fittings.

One staff member had poignantly rearranged the window signs, facing the rear car park, which counted down the number of days left open to read: “Sad to go”.
