YEAR five and six pupils from the Upper Wharfedale primary federation are being given a head start in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) as this becomes integral to a new, enhanced curriculum.
This term, a designated leader in STEM, teacher Stuart Willis, is rolling out fun and interactive projects at Grassington, Cracoe and Rylstone primary schools, with Burnsall and Kettlewell schools to follow.
Last year, Mr Willis led an exciting F1 club, where children were able to design and construct mini racing cars, then race them on a purpose-built track, with help and resources from creators of the F1 in Schools programme, Denford Ltd. This term STEM activities include pupils designing and making bridges to span the River Wharfe.
Ella Besharati, executive head teacher for the Upper Wharfedale Primary Federation, added: “It’s invaluable to have Stuart as a lead in STEM. Last term we were also able to run two dedicated science days with subjects tailored to Key Stage 2.”
