A RESIDENT at a Silsden care home has celebrated his 102nd birthday.

And Hugh Myers-Dickinson marked the occasion in style, receiving a flood of cards and messages thanks to an initiative known as Postcards of Kindness.

As part of the venture, aimed at combating isolation among the elderly, people write and send postcards to care home residents.

But there is also a special club whose supporters send birthday cards and wishes to those aged 100 and over.

Hugh is a resident at Summerfield Care Home, in Skipton Road.

The home’s activity co-ordinator, Louise Pennington, said: “Hugh was overwhelmed and amazed at how many cards he received on his birthday – some contained really lovely messages that brought a tear to his eye.”

As part of the Postcards of Kindness scheme, Summerfield has also received more than 50 postcards from as far away as the USA, Canada and Norway.

“They are a great talking point and our residents really enjoy looking at them,” added Louise.
