AN event to mark the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe is being planned in Settle.

Age UK North Craven asked permission from Settle Town Council on Monday to go ahead with the commemoration on VE Day which will take place on Friday, May 8.

The anniversary marks the day towards the end of World War Two when fighting against Nazi Germany came to an end in Europe.

Age UK North Craven chief officer Jonathan Kerr told the monthly council meeting that the charity was looking at holding some sort of event in the market square and asked the council if it would be able to support it.

Town council chairman Cllr Dan Balsamini said the council was happy to support the event but would not necessarily take the lead on its organisation.

“We think this is a great event to support,” he said.

The council added that should a suggested revival of Settle Carnival not take place, then funding set aside for the carnival could be used towards a community event, such as a VE Day commemoration.
