COMMUNITY groups around Settle district are to be written to to see if they want a revival of the carnival.

The carnival ended in the early 1990s and there was a suggestion last year that it could be revived.

A preliminary date of June 20 was suggested by the town council.

However, enthusiasm has slowed for the event.

The council agreed to support its revival with a sum of £5,000 towards costs. There was strong support during a community meeting on September 20 but at a further meeting on October 16 it was poorly attended by the public.

Ian Orton, deputy town council clerk said the council would mailshot all the community groups and review the responses at the February meeting.

He suggested that if the responses did not show a widespread support for the carnival’s revival, then the idea should be ‘diplomatically dropped’.

The mailshot was agreed unanimously by councillors.
