ALL these wonderful old pictures are of Skipton and were taken around 1900, at a time when the town’s animal markets were held in the High Street and when the statue of Sir Mathew Wilson MP was still in its original position, in front of Holy Trinity Church.

Part of the Rowley Ellwood collection, the picture of Waller Hill, top right, prompted someone to share their memories on the archive website.

They explained how the man was walking alongside the wall that guarded a deep gully where the beck ran. The road continued on past where the picture was taken into an area of slum dwellings and onto Gallow Bridge.
