KEIGHLEY gardener Steve Thorpe came to the rescue with a huge pile of extra sandbags when Haworth flooded recently.
Water surged through the bottom of Mill Hey, next to Haworth railway station, during the height of Storm Ciara earlier this month.
Businesses and householders limited the damage with around 250 sandbags provided at short notice by the village’s Fire Cadets.
But an appeal went out for more sandbags after warnings were issued about the impending arrival of Storm Dennis the following weekend.
Steve and his son Joe, who create and maintain the flower displays in Keighley town hall square, decided to donate another 15 sandbags to the community.
They filled them and took them out last Sunday before the second storm.
Steve said: “Haworth and Worth Valley Fire Cadets filled up the first sandbags and they were put out before the Ciara floods.
“We could have done with more, so me and Joe decided to donate another 150. We took them down to Mill Hey so they were ready the next weekend. We wanted to do our bit.”
