ORGANISERS of next month’s Tour de Yorkshire say the four day cycling event is still scheduled to take place, but it is ‘constantly monitoring’ the coronavirus situation and taking advice from Public Health England.

The event, from April 30 to May 3, will see two stages taking place in Craven. On Friday, May 1, stage one of the women’s race and stage two of the men’s race, the ‘Three Peaks Stage’, will start in Skipton and finish in Leyburn, while on Sunday, May 3, the action will return to Craven for the ‘Yorkshire Classic’ from Halifax to Leeds.

The Three Peaks Stage will cover 124.5km with the world’s top female riders starting in the morning with the men following in the afternoon.

The route takes in huge swathes of the Yorkshire Dales National Park with sprint sections in Settle and Horton in Ribblesdale, then past the Yorkshire Three Peaks and Ribblehead Viaduct.

Craven District Council narrowly agreed to support the event and originally pledged up to £180,000 as its share. Councillors recently learnt that £125,000 would come out of the North and West Yorkshire Business Rates Pool.

A spokesperson for Welcome to Yorkshire said: “Welcome to Yorkshire is constantly monitoring the coronavirus situation and will be taking expert advice over the coming weeks from Public Health England, the World Heath Organisation (WHO) and the Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO), a Tour de Yorkshire partner. “
