ACTION on Climate Emergency Settle (ACE) held its latest monthly Green Café meeting at Sugar and Spice in the town.

Guest speaker Alicia Turner, of Settle, explained about COP26 in November - UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties number 26.

For the first time, the COP will take place in the UK, in Glasgow. Each year at the conferences, the countries of the world meet to try to make agreements and act on the climate emergency.

Alicia belongs to the organisation UK Youth Climate Coalition (UKYCC), who will be at COP26 and is working to prepare for it.

This group seeks to mobilise and empower young people to take positive action towards global climate justice.

Craven is well represented in respect to attending COPs.

Also present at the meeting was Paul Kelly, of Settle, who had attended the 2015 COP21 in Paris, which produced the Paris Agreement, and Shaun Nixon, of Barnoldswick, who had attended the COP6 Conference in 2000 in Bonn, Germany.

Shaun had taken part in the conference as one of the two British youth in the international youth delegation. He was then 17 and attending Ermysted’s at Skipton.

Sacha of Sugar and Spice reminded people that they can bring used ink and toner cartridges for recycling to the café, and old laptops that will be wiped and reformatted and given to good causes. She showed other eco-products they sell.

Alicia’s talk was very well received. She is willing to give this talk to other groups that are interested, and also plans to make a video on the topic.

ACE Settle is working to support Settle Town Council and Craven District Council with their “Zero carbon by 2030 plans”. For more details of ACE contact acesettleandarea@gmail.com.

Alicia said: “Climate change is happening now. In tackling it, we need to address social and economic injustices, alongside restoring nature on a global scale, replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy, and making more sustainable lifestyle choices.

"With COP26 being held in the UK, this is a huge opportunity for us all to engage with the issue and take meaningful action on the climate emergency, and help pave the way towards a better world.”
