BRITAIN’S Got Talent semi-finalist saucepan wearing Martyn Crofts from Skipton is just one of the performers to volunteer their time to entertain residents of care homes during the coronavirus lockdown - but more are needed.

Karen Darvell, who came up with the idea, and who has the support of North Yorkshire County Council, says residents of care homes have not been able to see their families and friends for weeks and many are struggling to cope.

“Many are also stuck in isolation in their rooms whilst regular activities are not taking place and entertainers are currently unable to visit. I’m looking to bring the pleasure of music to help lift the spirits of residents and staff and am looking for local talented musicians and singers who can volunteer their time and talent to entertain local care homes residents,” she said.

Just one performer will take part at a time, and outside the care home, with strict social distancing in place.

“If any willing performers would contact me, I’d be pleased to manage arrangements and coordinate visits across our region so that as many care homes as possible are visited,” said Mrs Darvell.

Martyn made it to the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent in 2012 with his dalek inspired performance. His new ‘desert island disc’ show has been put together specially for the coronavirus lockdown.

“He has put together the format specially for the crisis as we are all somewhat on a desert island and also because the generation he’s going to sing for will know the show,” said Mrs Darvell.

“He is taking requests and will be doing dedications for residents and staff. He has his first booking this week as do a cellist, a folk and country singer and an international soprano star who are all from Skipton and have generously and kindly volunteered their time and talent.”

She added: “If there are more talented artists out there, just an hour’s performance would really lift spirits for both staff and residents.”
