As a former long term resident of SKIPTON I made a visit today (June 26) and was delighted to find the market was back up and running.
Once I had got my bearings (I’m a guide dog user) I have to say how much better I found the new arrangements for the market. Closing the high street created a more sedate atmosphere for browsing. Okay, I realise it had just been raining. Nevertheless, the space gave me chance to look and consider. Yes, as a result I spent.
Surely the high street traders stand to gain by the arrangements too? More room on the pavements, again to consider and spend without jostling with as many people.
Of course car users will grumble but there’s loads of parking space available that is handy for town. And enough by-pass to cater for through traffic.
I hope the council will closely monitor the system over the summer and consider whether it’s worth making the system permanent.
