A COMET was captured on film over Ilkley this week.

Neowise is a comet, or an icy celestial body on a long orbit in outer space, that was first discovered in March as it approached the sun, and throughout July has been visible across the world, though it will begin to fade from view as it starts its journey away from us towards the end of this month.

James Whitesmith, of Yeadon, patiently waited for hours on Ilkley Moor to capture the comet on film on Monday night at 11.50pm.

He said: “The sky didn’t become dark enough to see the comet until almost 11.30pm so it was a case of staying patient for a chilly couple of hours on the side of the moor.

“Once the comet was visible I captured a range of shots that could be composited together back home on the computer to create the final image.

“I rarely shoot astro-photography so found this to be quite a challenge but with a little experimentation managed to get what I needed.

“In the end the images were captured at about 11.50pm.

“By that time the comet was just visible to the naked eye and could be clearly seen through binoculars.”
