WITH reference to 'Name That Church', Craven Herald, July 30.
The church is St Mary’s at Conistone-with-Kilnsey ;
I know the churchyard well as I am part of a team from Upper Wharfedale Heritage Group who have been surveying the churchyard, recording details of all the gravestones and memorials there.
Not only are we recording the inscriptions, but also carrying out a detailed survey of their condition and design as part of a national initiative (Discovering England’s Burial Spaces Project, based at the University of York) to record gravestones in their historical and archaeological context.
The churchyard has two listed memorials, and also the grave of the well-known local antiquarian and founder of the Grassington folk museum, John Crowther (1858-1930).
Our team has also been surveying churchyards at Embsay-with-Eastby, and at Skipton, Holy Trinity (the latter in partnership with the Friends of Raikes Road Burial Ground).
