THESE likely looking lads pictured in the Craven Herald, 50 years ago in September, 1970, were rightly proud of the seat they had provided on the High Road to Langcliffe, Settle.
The boys were all members of the Castleberg (Settle) scout group, and had spent the previous few months doing what they could to publicise European Conservation Year. At Settle Carnival that year, they had gone as 'The Dragon of Pollution', for which they had won a prize. The Craven Herald reported how the seat was to replace an old one, that had fallen into disrepair, and although it had been finished some time earlier, by the cub-scout section, it had first needed planning permission. It was hoped that many walkers would use the seat, and enjoy views towards Ribblesdale.
