LAST week’s church was St James, Dalehead, and was correctly identified by Michael Townson, Helen Wallbank and Elizabeth Staig.

Helen tells us: “It was built to replace the original St. James’ that was demolished due to the construction of Stocks Reservoir in the 1930s. The ‘new’ church was built to a similar style, but smaller and used the stone from the first church, along with it’s fixtures and fittings, including the pews, font and stained glass windows. It was consecrated on July 30,1938 by Bishop Mounsey, the Assistant Bishop of Bradford.

The bodies of those interred in the original church yard were moved to this new site in 1927 during the hours of midnight and 5am.

In 2011 an archaeological survey and community-led excavation was undertaken to discover the foundations of the original church in the car park by School Lane. These, along with the tree-lined entry to the building, have been left exposed and consolidated as a lasting memorial to a dispersed community.

Many people with connections to Dalehead attend the special services at Harvest and Christmas. The graveyard is still open, with many people whose ancestors came from Dale Head requesting burial there.”

Elizabeth Staig tells us that the last service at the original church was held in 1936.

“Ironically the site of the old church never flooded, and is now a car park.

More recently another historic event took place on August 29, 2019, the first ever marriage at St James’ Church, Dalehead , of Sam and Claire Owen.
