PLANS to build two affordable homes in Lakeber Drive, Bentham have been given the go-ahead.
The Craven District Council scheme will make use of an ‘underused’ garage site, which is surrounded by existing housing. The new one -bedroom homes will have solar panels, electric vehicle charging points, and two parking spaces.
The scheme, which was approved yesterday (Monday) by the council’s online planning committee meeting, follows the approval last month of four affordable homes on council-owned land off Duke Street, also in Bentham.
Cllr Richard Foster, council leader, said: “I’m really pleased that we have been given the go-ahead to build even more much-needed affordable homes. We know there is a need for affordable housing within Craven, and shared ownership housing is become more and more popular. Around 150 households have currently registered an interest in shared ownership housing in the district, and this number is growing.
“These new shared ownership homes will also help generate revenue to support council services for our residents and businesses. The development will also improve the landscape of this dilapidated site, improving the area for existing residents.”
Shared ownership allows shares of between 25 per cent and 75 per cent to be purchased initially, with a deposit of only five per cent on that share and a subsidised rent payable on the rest.
