Who remembers learning to roller skate at the rink in Skipton?

This old photograph is part of the Rowley Collection of pictures and shows two men who were the instructor and door keeper at the rink.

Behind them flags are draped from the ceiling and there are draped canopies around the seating area suggesting it was a riot of colour for those who went there.

Comments posted on the website suggest the rink was in Broughton Road and the directors reserved the right to refuse admission to anyone who appeared 'undesirable'.

They said the rink was later destroyed by fire and that there was another one, for a time, at the bottom of Raikes Road.

We are not sure which rink the one in the photo shows but another person had written about her brother telling her a roller skating rink had been started in the Temperance Hall. It soon became popular. Before long a large wooden building was erected on the site where Magnet and Kwik Fit sit. This is more than likely the one which burnt down.

Sadly there is no date suggestion for the picture but we believe it may be the mid 1960s.
