LAST week’s church was the Independent Methodist Chapel at Walmsgate, Barnoldswick, also known as The New Ship, and was correctly identified by Dr Andrea Capstick, Clifford Meehan and Jennifer Wareing.

Jacqueline Barrett, a member of the chapel, says:”In years gone by it was thought of as The The New Ship. It’s a beautiful old church, prior to Covid, (and hopefully, again) the church was open to the public on certain dates, and is well worthy of a visit.”

Historic England has contributed towards the restoration of the church which as stated on its facade, was completed in 1892.

Historic England says the chapel seats 750 people and describes it as a ‘fine example of Victorian Free Church architecture in Barnoldswick’.

The grade II star listed building became ‘at risk’ in the early 2000s, due to dry rot, and was saved by enabling repairs from 2004 to 2011, aided by three grants from Historic England.

In 2015, tribute was paid to the then 90 year old Don Carson, of Barnoldswick, who had been playing the organ at the church for 58 years, since 1956.

The Harrison and Harrison pipe organ was installed in the church in 1896 and has a Grade I Historic Organ certificate.

There were worries about how the organ would work after it had not been played for 12 years, as the Independent Methodist Church underwent its extensive renovation.

But, as it turned out, the organ - which is all mechanical and it what is called a ‘tracker organ’ played beautifully.

In 2009, the church was awarded a ‘Best in Barlick’ award for its restoration work on the chapel.
