A FORMER president of Skipton with Stirton and Thorlby Women’s Institute, Florence Dent, has died aged 98.
Mrs Dent, formerly of Romille Street, Skipton, was president in 2005 and was among those who later planted a WI tree in the High Street. She died in Thornton Hill Care Home.
She supported her husband Jack when he served as Master of the Freemasons Mawsis Lodge and gave her time for many years delivering for Meals on Wheels. During the war she worked at Carleton Mill assembling Rover engines for the war effort and was a mill worker until she married. She was later an insurance agent, travelling round local villages by bus collecting weekly cash premiums she would carry home in her shopping bag.
Both Jack and Florence regularly visited America to stay with their youngest daughter Linda, and Florence took her elderly mother on pilgrimage to Lourdes. A funeral was held at Christ Church where Jack was a past warden and where three generations of the family were married.
Florence leaves three daughters, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was buried at the Tarn Moor Memorial Woodland Cemetery beside her husband and granddaughter, Olivia, who died nine years ago.
